Akwa Ibom State Govt has ordered the demolition
of shrines, graveyards and other structures which have suddenly sprung up on
roads undergoing construction in Ikono LGA of the state.
-
The directive, issued during an inspection of
the 4.6km Mbiafun Nkwongo-NungUkim Road, by the state Commissioner for Works,
Mr. Ephraim Inyang, was sequel to the emergence of shrines, graveyards and
emergency buildings on the road soon after the commencement of construction
work with alleged dubious plans to extort or force the government to pay
compensation on the land where those structures are erected.
-
Inyang warned that what the government required
from the people at this austere period was cooperation and not arm-twisting to
enable government to provide the people with developmental infrastructure and dividends
of democracy.
-
It will be recalled that at least, 1,417 illegal
structures including those whose owners had received compensation but refused
to relocate to allow contractors handling the dualization of the 91.7km
Uyo-Etinan Road and the 39.4 Etinan-NdonEyo Road, Etinan LGA stretching to
Awa-Iman in Onna LGA of the state to do their work, were demolished penultimate
week by the state govt.
