STAKEHOLDERS DISAGREE ON 11 YEARS FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS

-          Stakeholders in education sector have reacted to plans by National Universities Commission (NUC) to increase the duration of medical study from 6 to 11 years.

-          According to the stakeholders, the development is expensive, discouraging, and may lead to the dearth of medical doctors in the country.
-          Deputy Director, Distance Learning Institute (DLI), University of Ibadan, Prof. Oyesoji Aremu said NUC’s announcement of 11 years, appears too much a time to spend in medical school.
-          Also reacting, Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, said NUC made a statement that lacks back-up by any policy or curriculum.
