The Federal Government has
nominated a former Group Managing Director (GMD) of THE Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mohammed Barkindo for the position of the
Secretary- General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countrues (OPEC)
in July 2016.

Barkindo served as the Acting
Secretary-General of OPEC in 2006 and was NNPC GMD between 2009 and 2010.

A Federal Government official
and some representatives of OPEC confirmed the development, adding that
Barkindo has the potential to end OPEC leadership deadlock.

Barkindo’s nomination was
forwarded was forwarded recently to replace Abdalla Salem el-Badri, who is the
current OPEC Secretary General.
